Addelaid Ann Ferreira Watt is a 51-year-old prominent South African prosecutor was killed on Monday, November 18th in court this week by a loaded gun that discharged when it somehow fell, according to reports. The Senior advocate Addelaid Ferreira-Watt screamed in agony when she was knocked off her feet by the pellets which blew a gaping hole in her left hip.

Ferreira-Watt, who was fierce in the courtroom and a familiar name in the South African art community. She had served for 27 years as a senior State advocate.
A legal friend of the state advocate said: ‘There is absolutely no need for a weapon being submitted in evidence in a court of law to still be capable of being fired.
‘The weapon and the ammunition that it had contained at the time of the alleged crime should have been submitted in separate evidence bags so someone is in big trouble.
‘Addelaid was an excellent lawyer and a devoted mother and a lover of art and animals and for her to be taken away so cruelly and in such a freakish way is just agonising.’
In her final days, Addelaid took to social media and expressed her desire to head back home, spend time with family and even possibly retire. In one of her final Facebook posts on November 12th, a few days before her death, she was down and seemingly unhappy about travelling to work. Her tone was that of frustration.
“Dispirited here in the valley of Ixopo and Umzimkhulu. Difficult to get things going. Think it’s time to hang up my boots.”

Addelaid has a daughter, Lindsay, who is engaged to be married. She wrote on Facebook, “The most beautiful soul on this planet, my Mamma! I only hope to be half the woman you are – the best, most beautiful, most caring, kindest, funniest and hard as nails (when she needs to be) lady I know. I have been blessed beyond measure 🙏🏻❤️”
She is being described as ‘A loving and caring mother, a loyal and dear friend, an incredibly smart, intelligent, dynamic resilient and beautiful woman.’
Addelaid Ferreira Watt Death & Cause (Accidental Gun Shot Wound)
Addelaid was in Ixopo regional court when the weapon was introduced as an exhibit in a robbery case, fell and accidentally fired, the Sunday Times reported.
Police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said: ‘It is alleged on Monday at 3.20 pm a 51-year-old woman was taken to hospital after she was struck by a shot to the left hip.
‘She later died in hospital. It is alleged that the weapon was brought to court to be entered as evidence in a house robbery case when it accidentally discharged in court.
Addelaid’s employer confirmed her death in a letter to colleagues which reads:
“Her untimely passing is mourned by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. The family has requested that their privacy be respected,” KwaZulu-Natal director of public prosecutions Elaine Zungu wrote, according to the outlet.
Addelaid’s loved ones remembered the lawyer Tuesday for having a “compassionate heart.”
“You have outstanding charisma, cool logic and a compassionate heart,” Ric Holt wrote in a Facebook tribute.
