Alan Farthing is a gynecologist best known for being the fiance of Jill Dando, an English journalist, TV presenter, and newsreader who was murdered on April 26, 1999. The couple met in December 1997 on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. Farthing was separated from his wife at the time. A couple of months after Farthing’s divorce was finalised, Farthing and Dando announced they were engaged on 31 January 1999. Their wedding was set to take place on 25 September.

Jill Dando was a journalist and newsreader born in Scotland in 1961. She worked for the BBC from 1985 until she died in 1991. She initially worked as a newseader for BBC Radio Devon. After stints in regional television, Dando moved to London to present national news in 1988. Dando presented the BBC television programmes Breakfast Time, Breakfast News, the BBC One O’Clock News, the Six O’Clock News, the travel programme Holiday, the crime appeal series Crimewatch, the BBC’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada in 2002 and 2006 and coverage of the FIFA World Cup.
She also presented travel programmes such as BBC Holiday, a series of themed programmes (including “Holiday at Home” in 1997), “Food Safari,” and “Tour de France.” Other work included work on Granada Reports (frequent appearances in 1989–90) and presenting the football programme Match Of The Day.
Jill Dando Death & Cause
Dando was shot dead outside her home in Fulham, Southwest London, on the morning of April 26th, 1999. Her death prompted the biggest murder inquiry conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the country’s largest criminal investigation since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper.
A local man, Barry George, was convicted and imprisoned for the murder, but after eight years in prison, he was acquitted following an appeal and retrial. In 2012, the Serbian ‘warlord’ Arkan was named a suspect in the case, although he died in 2000. No other suspect has been charged with Dando’s murder, and the case remains unsolved despite police identifying over 2,000 potential suspects.
