Alex Coffey is best known as the Phillies beat writer for The Philadephia Inquirer. She previously worked as a freelance writer from Jun 2021 to Jan 2022. Ahead of Sunday’s game on August 7, Coffey asked Pete Rose (an American former professional baseball player and manager) what he would say to those who believed his presence at the event sent a negative message to women. Rose’s response? “It was 55 years ago, babe.”
The response has been termed misogynistic since the former baseball player and manager 2017 accused Rose of statutory rape by an unidentified woman. The two allegedly had a sexual relationship before she turned 16, which was the age of consent in Ohio. Rose acknowledged his affair but denied it happened before she was 16.
I asked Pete Rose what he would say to people who say his presence here sends a negative message to women. His response: “No, I’m not here to talk about that. Sorry about that. It was 55 years ago babe.”
