Joshua Brown, a key prosecution witness during the Amber Guyger murder trial and Botham Jean’s neighbor was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Dallas on Friday evening on October 5th, the Jean family’s attorney confirmed with Brown’s mother.

Joshua Brown hails Jacksonville, Florida. He studied interdisciplinary science at South Florida for college.  According to his witness testimony at Guyger’s trial, he was a roofing contractor for a few years after graduating from college and now he’s been running a business managing AirBNBs, including two in Los Angeles and one in Atlanta. He was working on getting another AirBNB in Dallas.

Lee Merritt, an attorney for Botham Jean’s family broke the news of Brown’s shooting. In his post about Brown, Merritt wrote that he was a former athlete and now worked as an entrepreneur in Dallas.

Merritt wrote on Facebook about Brown: “We have more work to do deal with the constant threats to our community both from within and without. Brown deserves the same justice he sought to ensure the Jean family. The Dallas County criminal justice system must be mobilized to identify his killer and see that he is held accountable for this murder.”

Joshua Brown Testified in Guyger’s high-profile trial 

Joshua Brown gave an emotional testimony last week during Guyger’s high-profile trial as he was a prosecution witness in the case of Jean’s shooting death.

Guyger was found guilty of murder in the death of Jean after she shot him in his apartment, claiming she thought she was in her apartment and that Jean was an intruder. A jury in Dallas found the 31-year-old guilty of murder. She has been sentenced by that same jury to 10 years in prison on October 2nd, 2019.

Brown said he met Jean for the first time in the hallway of the South Side Flats on September 6th, 2018 — the day Jean was killed.

Brown testified that he heard two people speaking that night but couldn’t understand what was being said. He said he then heard two gunshots.

Joshua Brown, one of the key prosecution witnesses during the Amber Guyger murder trial and Botham Jean’s neighbor, was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Dallas on Friday evening October 5th, the Jean family’s attorney, Lee Merritt confirmed with Brown’s mother.

Police say they responded to the shooting at the Atera apartments in the 4600 block of Cedar Springs Road at around 10:40 p.m. They found the victim lying in the parking lot of the complex with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

The victim was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital and later died from his injuries.

A tweet by Merrit read “Joshua Brown was shot in his mouth & chest. He was exiting his car at his apt when he was ambushed & shot at close range. His mother asked my office to help find out who murdered her son. She suspects foul play. He had no known enemies. He worked for a living. We need answers.”

Joshua Brown Identity was not Immediately Released

Brown’s identity was not immediately released by police or the medical examiner but was confirmed by civil attorney Lee Merritt, who said he was told by Brown’s mother. Police say he did not have ID cards on him as per NBC DFW.

Witnesses Account of Joshua Brown Shooting

Multiple witnesses told police that they heard gunshots and saw a vehicle speeding out of the parking lot. A description of the vehicle was not immediately made available. There have been no arrests made.

On Twitter, Merritt said Brown was “ambushed” as he was leaving his vehicle and was “shot at close range.”

Joshua Brown Suspect & Motive

A suspect hasn’t been identified and a motive isn’t known, according to local news sources. But witnesses said that a silver four-door sedan was seen leaving the parking lot quickly after they heard gunshots, Dallas News reported.

The Jean family’s attorney shared on Twitter that he spoke with Brown’s mother and she was devastated. He wrote on Twitter: “I just spoke with Joshua Browns mother. She is devastated. We all are. Joshua Brown was a key witness in the murder of Botham Jean that helped put Amber Guyger away. We need answers.”
