Dave Lopez began his career as a sportswriter at the Huntington Park Daily Signal newspaper. After working for six years, he decided to make a move to TV signing on to do general assignment and sports reporter at KHJ, now KCAL9, and then KFMB in San Diego.
Dave Lopez Career
In the summer of 1997, after working in San Diego for nine months, Dave returned to Los Angele and started working at CBS2. While there, his versatility and incredible storytelling techniques were easily identifiable.
“A wonderful man named Pete Noyes hired me and in his gruff wonderful voice,” Pete told him that he was not gonna do sports but instead, would be a newsman. “You’re gonna have a lot longer career in the news than in sports, “Pete told Lopez at the time.
When Dave was not in front of the Camera covering the news, he was making it, like when he went public with his battle with prostate cancer in 1997.
After only nine months in San Diego, Dave returned to L.A. and started at CBS2 in the summer of 1977 and immediately began showing off his versatility and incredible storytelling ability.
Dave Lopez’s Wife’s Death
Dave revealed that he was married to his high school sweetheart Elaine. He revealed that Elaine passed away in 2013. The couple was blessed with two children.
In Feb 2013, Dave was supposed to cover the story of Christopher Dorner, a former officer of the Los Angeles Police Department. He was in the headlines beginning on February 3, 2013, when committed a series of shootings in Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino County, California. All the victims were law enforcement officers and the daughter of a retired police captain. Dorner killed four people and wounded three others. On February 12, 2013, Dorner died during a standoff with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies after a shootout at a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains.
“I missed the Christopher Dorner story. My wife, God rest her soul, was very, very sick at that time and she was in intensive care, and I did not go to work that month,” Dave said.
“But that’s the only major story that I didn’t cover in Los Angeles, everyone else I’ve been a part of somehow, some way.”
