Dr. Robert Hadden Evelyn Yang
On January 16, 2020 Evelyn Yang, the wife of presidential hopeful Andrew Yang, in an exclusive interview with CNN said that she was sexually assaulted by her obstetrician-gynecologist when she was pregnant with her first child in 2012.
She said at first she didn’t see any red flags but as the months progressed, Hadden started asking her inappropriate, unsolicited questions about sexual activity with her husband, which were unrelated to her health or the health of her unborn child.
“There was absolutely no premise for that line of questioning, and it seemed like he just wanted to hear about me talking about sex. What I kept sticking to was this: ‘OK, so my doctor is pervy. I have a pervy doctor, but I’m going to focus on having a healthy baby,’ and the idea of changing doctors was overwhelming for me.”
She added that since it was her first pregnancy Hadden took advantage of that. “The examinations became longer, more frequent, and I learned that they were unnecessary most of the time.” but she choose to trust him.
She revealed that when she was seven months pregnant Hadden violated her trust. “I was in the exam room, and I was dressed and ready to go. Then, at the last minute, he kind of made up an excuse. He said something about, ‘I think you might need a C-section,’ and he proceeded to grab me over to him and undress me and examine me internally, ungloved. I knew it was wrong. I knew I was being assaulted.”
Yang said that like many sexual assault survivors she just froze, “I imagined myself as someone being, you know, like I would throw a chair at him and run out yelling bloody murder. I just kind of froze like a deer in headlights, just frozen. I knew it was happening. I could feel it. I remember trying to fix my eyes on a spot on the wall and just trying to avoid seeing his face as he was assaulting me, just waiting for it to be over.”
She said after the incident she left and never returned.
Dr. Robert Hadden Sexual Assault Charges
In 2014 Hadden was charged with sexually abusing six patients. According to court papers he was accused of fondling and performing oral sex on the women, many pregnant, between September 2011 and June 2012. He allegedly abused the women at his Washington Heights and Upper East Side offices. He was charged with nine-count, two counts of forcible touching, five counts of criminal sex act and two counts of sexual abuse.
In 2016 he was sentenced to a conditional discharge after taking a no-jail plea deal. The DA’s office agreed to a plea deal with Hadden where he pleaded guilty to one count of forcible touching and one count of third-degree sexual assault. He lost his medical license and also had to register as the lowest level of sex offender. He never went to jail for his crimes.
Cyrus Vance Jr, Manhattan District Attorney, released a statement to CNN and said, “Because a conviction is never a guaranteed outcome in a criminal trial, our primary concern was holding him accountable and making sure he could never do this again – which is why we insisted on a felony conviction and permanent surrender of his medical license.”
Dr. Robert Hadden Columbia
Dr Hadden was licensed to practice medicine in New York starting in 1990. He began his career as a gynecologist at the Columbia University Medical Center and their affiliated hospitals.
In 2018 NY Post reported that seventeen women who accused Robert Hadden of sexually assaulting them were suing Columbia University and its affiliated hospitals, accusing them of covering up the doctor’s behavior for decades.
“Despite the fact that medical chaperones, nurses, supervisors, administrators, doctors and other hospital personnel were aware of the sexual exploitation and abuse being perpetrated by Robert Hadden, dating back to at least the 1990’s … [the defendants] actively and deliberately — and inexplicably — concealed Robert Hadden’s sexual abuse for decades.”
