Jennifer J. Cummings is the daughter of Elijah Cummings and Maya Rockeymoore. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings became her step-mother through her marriage with the Democratic Congressman.

The U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, a committee chairman known for his devotion to Baltimore and civil rights and for blunt and passionate speechmaking, died of longstanding health problems early Thursday morning October 17th, 2019, his office said. He was 68 years old.

Jennifer previously worked as a senior communications strategist at The Fratelli Group for 12 years where she led advocacy and media relations efforts for a wide range of clients. The Fratelli Group is a marketing and PR company that helps promote issues in U.S. trade and agricultural policy and education among other issues. They also worked with a “Latin American nation” to “develop and implement a multi-faceted campaign that dramatically improved the nation’s image in Washington.”

Not much is known about Elijah Cummings daughter. Rockeymoore Cummings did not have children of her own. But after marrying Elijah Cummings in 2008, she became a stepmother. Rep. Cummings has three children from his first marriage with Joyce Matthews. The two daughters are Jennifer and Adia, who posed with the Obamas in the Instagram photo below.

Adia, who graduated from Howard University in 2016, also made headlines that year for using her father’s car, which he had let her borrow, to drive for Lyft.

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings is an American politician and the chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. Prior to her election as party chair, she briefly ran for Governor of Maryland. She owns a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm, and holds a PhD in Political Science from Purdue University. She received a 2017 endorsement from EMILY’s List.

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings Tribute to her Late Husband

Rockeymoore released a statement following his husband’s death which reads:

“It is with great sadness and a heavy collective heart that we announce the passing of Chairman Elijah Eugene Cummings. He was a father, a husband, a son of Baltimore, and a Statesman who served Maryland’s 7th Congressional District for more than 20 years and served 16 years prior to that as a Delegate in the Maryland General Assembly.

Chairman Cummings will always be remembered for dedicating his life’s work to improving the lives of others, standing up for his community, and protecting our Democracy.

“Congressman Cummings was an honorable man who proudly served his district and the nation with dignity, integrity, compassion, and humility. He worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation’s diversity was our promise, not our problem. It’s been an honor to walk by his side on this incredible journey. I loved him deeply and will miss him dearly.” Maryland Democratic Party Chair Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings said.

Rep. Elijah Cummings Funeral

Rep. Elijah Cummings’s funeral was held on Friday, October 25th, 2019. It was marked by speeches from Barack Obama, the Clintons, and Cummings’s family was as much a heartfelt celebration of a man who dedicated his life to public service as it was an indictment of President Donald Trump’s character in office.

“He had to go on to actually work to fight for the soul of our democracy against very real corruption,” Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, the Maryland Democrat’s widow, said at New Psalmist Baptist Church. “I want you all to know that it was not easy. What Chairman Cummings did was not easy. And it got infinitely more difficult in the last month of his life when he sustained personal attacks and attacks on his beloved city.”
