Godfrey Gao was born on September 22nd, 1984 and died on November 27th, 2019. He was a Taiwanese-Canadian model and actor. He is noted as the first Asian model to appear in a campaign for Louis Vuitton. Gao was known for playing Magnus Bane in the 2013 movie “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” and he appeared on several TV shows and movies in Taiwan and China.

Gao was born in Taipei, Taiwan to a Taiwanese father and a Malaysian mother. Gao’s father is Shanghainese but raised in Taiwan while his mother is a Peranakan Chinese from George Town who was a former model who won the Miss Penang beauty pageant in 1970, according to the Central News Agency.

After his education, Gao returned to Taiwan to work as a model in 2004 and was managed by JetStar Entertainment.  In 2011 he was announced as the first Asian model for the fashion brand Louis Vuitton. He appeared on several TV dramas and films and made his American film debut in 2013 as Magnus Bane in the film adaption of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. His notable credits include the 2015 film Wedding Bible alongside Korean actress Yoo In-na; the lead role in the 2016 television drama Remembering Lichuan, which brought him broader recognition as an actor across Asia; and the 2017 romantic comedy film Love is a Broadway Hit, alongside Wang Likun, Wang Chuanjun, Yuan Li and Naren Weiss.

Gao was rumoured to be dating 22-year-old Su Xiang Han (known as Bella). The two were reported to have met with the help of former basketball star Mao Jia En and hit it off because their personalities matched. That is where speculations about their dating begun. However, in 2018 Godfrey came out to deny any claims that he was engaged or he was seeing anybody at the moment.

He said that he was too busy in his career and that he had a lot to do before settling down with anyone. His manager said “He has several good friends he talks to, but has not achieved the level of stability required to get engaged,” Godfrey has also talked in various interviews denying claims that he was seeing anyone.

According to China Press, Gao’s rumoured along with two bosses from his agency, Wang Jun and Qiu Xiu Zhu, are reportedly flying to Zhejiang to collect his body.

Godfrey Gao Death & Cause (Heart Attack)

On November 27th, 2019, Apple Daily reported that Gao collapsed while in Ningbo filming Chase Me, a sports reality television series broadcast on Zhejiang Television. He was taken to a hospital, where after attempts at resuscitation, he was pronounced dead. Gao’s death was confirmed by his agency JetStar Entertainment on the social media site Sina Weibo, which said in a statement that “in the early hours of Nov. 27th, our beloved Godfrey collapsed while filming on set. Following three hours of rescue efforts, he, unfortunately, left us. We are very shocked and saddened and even until now find it impossible to accept.”

Taiwan News reported a heart attack as the cause of death. His body will be transported to Taipei on November 27th, 2019.

Several fellow actors paid tribute to Godfrey Gao on social media after his death. Yoshi Sudarso wrote on Twitter, “Godfrey Gao was one of the first Asian men I heard about when I entered the business. He was a huge torch bearer for most of us. To see him pass at such a young age is unsettling. Thank you for your inspiration and for knocking down walls so we didn’t have to. RIP.”
