Santa Clarita Shooting – Saugus High School Shooting
On November 14, 2019 Nathaniel Berhow a student at Saugus High School marked his 16th birthday by walking into the quad of Saugus High School, pulled a gun out of his backpack, shot five people around him, then turned the gun on himself – all within 16 seconds according to surveillance video.
Gracie was identified as one of the students who died of gunshot wounds. A 14-year-old boy has not yet been identified. According to the deputy superintendent of William S. Hart Unified School District Mike Kuhlman, three other students who were wounded are in stable condition. Berhow remains in critical condition according to CBS News.

One of the students who witnessed the shooting said; “He was wearing black sunglasses at the time. He looked very familiar. Then he shot two people. I just saw him fire one, two, three … then I knew I had to get out of here. Like, we looked at each other.”
Police have not identified a motive in the shooting. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said; “There’s nothing really that stands out [with the suspect]. He wasn’t a loner. Wasn’t socially awkward. Was involved in student activities. Student athlete. This is kind of out of the blue, shocking pretty much everyone who knew him.”
He added that Nathaniel must have had knowledge and practice use of the gun as he carried the shooting rampage in a mere 16 seconds.
Nathaniel Berhow Father
Nathaniel’s father, Mark Berhow who died in December 2017 due to a “history of chronic alcoholism” was an “avid sportsman” who “loved big game hunting and fishing of all kinds,” according to an obituary for him. He also owned firearms and according to Villanueva other firearms were found in Nathaniel’s home.
A .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol was recovered from the crime scene. Several guns registered to the suspect’s father were recovered at the teen’s home, Villanueva said. Other guns found at the suspect’s home were not registered to anyone, he noted.
