Joana Sainz was a Spanish pop singer and dancer who died on September 1, 2019 while performing with Spain’s Super Hollywood Orchestra when she was hit by a pyrotechnic device and exploded into her stomach leaving her fatally injured.

Garcia was raised in Santander, a port city on Spain’s north coast in the Cantabria region. She later moved to Suances, also in Cantabria. “The first time I saw her, when she came, I realized her virtues. She was a girl with a lot of energy, with a lot of desire. From the beginning, I saw her a dancer,” Garcias teacher, Marta Rojo told El Espanol. Rojo recalled Garcia started formal dance training in either 2010 or 2011 and attended classes every day.

Sainz was the principal dancer and chief choreographer of Spain’s Super Hollywood Orchestra. On Sunday the group was performing in the small town of Las Berlanas about 80 miles northwest of Madrid when a pyrotechnic fired shards of its metal casing into her stomach.
The group promoter Isidoro López told the local news agency Avila Red that the incidence can’t be explained as they had been doing the same act for five years.
“Nobody can explain it. We have been doing the same [act] for five years.”
He added that the fireworks are like sparklers and supposed to last 15 to 20 seconds to “give a little show.’’ He said that maybe the manufacturer may have accidentally filled one of the sparklers with the wrong material, causing the device’s metal casing to explode.
In addition to her role with Orquesta Super Hollywood, Garcia worked with a dance school. “How sad!! With a whole life ahead!! Full of projects and energy. My heartfelt condolences to your family and friends,” friend Ingrid Alejandra Campos Robayo wrote on Garcia’s Facebook page.

Sainz was rushed to the hospital where she died of the injuries. Prior to being taken to the hospital a doctor and four nurses who were in the audience ran to try to help her. The 112 emergency service confirmed the incident happened at 1.49am and the ambulance arrived about 25 minutes later. The medical service attended to the singer at the scene before she was transferred to the Avila hospital in an unconscious state.
The town of Las Berlanas posted a tribute to Sainz on its Facebook page; “We want to pay our condolences to the family of Joana . . . of the Super Hollywood group who yesterday passed away, as well as to her group members. R.I.P Johana Sainz. You are in our memory.”
Prines 1SL said in a statement on Facebook : “The whole Prones family, partners, artists, friends, collaborators are very sad and dismayed by the loss of our companion and friend Joana Sainz, dancer and choreographer of the Super Hollywood Orchestra. We sincerely appreciate all the love we are receiving in these hard moments.”
According to authorities, the malfunctioning firework cartridge struck Garcia in the abdomen, causing severe damage to an artery. Band members immediately went over to try and help. A doctor and three nurses who were in the audience rushed onstage and provided first aid.
It took the ambulance 25 minutes to arrive. Paramedics attempted to stabilize Garcia, who unconscious, and then transported her to Avila Healthcare Complex where she was pronounced dead. No reason has been given for the ambulance’s delay.
