Who was Linda Benzel?
According to a tribute by her husband on Facebook, Linda L. Stockwell (Benzel) was born in Altoona Pennsylvania on November 15, 1948, to Stanley Karcz and Marie Gillespie. Linda began her career in Television in Buffalo New York, as a fill in “on air” anchor and reporter. She was very successful and was picked up by a station in Louisville Kentucky as a full-time on air anchor/reporter. From Louisville, she came to Denver and joined the 9 News team, and later at News 4 Colorado.
During her years in broadcasting, she produced numerous Emmy award-winning reports and series, including “Promises in the mist”, a series on the plight of the Rwandan Mountain gorilla. For anyone living in Denver in the ’70s, 80’s and 90’s, she was a household name, and local celebrity.
In 2001, she moved to Estill Springs, TN. Where she worked part-time as a reporter for the local newspaper. She also designed, created, and consulted on the community access station for the Tullahoma Utilities Board before she retired in 2010 to read books and play with her dogs.
Linda Benzel Illness and Death
Her husband says that for the last 18 months, she was victimized by multiple strokes/seizures. After the fourth round of strokes in September 2021, she asked her husband to promise not to take her back to any hospital. With each round of seizures and strokes, she lost pieces of herself but continued to endure with both grace and dignity.
On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, she had multiple seizures and strokes that resulted in her slipping into a coma. Under Hospice care at home, she passed on October 27, 2021.
Linda Benzel Husband (Jess Stockwell)
Linda was married to Jess Stockwell for 27 years. In the post confirming his death, Jess wrote, “Why she chose to marry me has been a great source of speculation and musings amongst my friends and continues to remain a mystery to me. I certainly married above my station.
She was beautiful, wicked smart, quick-witted and had the most disarming smile I have ever seen. She was generous to a fault and was one of the kindest people I have ever met. She looked at the world with a childlike sense of wonder and humor at the mystery of it all, and I often teased her about being a perpetual five-year-old. Our 27 years together were a blessing. My heart is broken in a way that will never heal completely. I am honored to have loved her and been loved by her.”
Jess concludes his tribute by confirming that there are no services planned. “I solicit no condolences and post this for informational purposes as she was loved and respected by so many others. The world is a lesser place without her in it. She will be deeply missed.”
Bill Greene wrote in a Facebook tribute, “FOR MY COLORADO FRIENDS & MEDIA ASSOCIATES
