Luke Islam is a 12-year-old singer who will be competing on Season 14 of America’s Got Talent which airs on NBC. In the final rounds of the Auditions (aired Tuesday, July 9th), Luke Islam Closed out the night performing “She Used to Be Mine” from the Broadway musical Waitress. His performance catapulted him right to the live Hollywood round as Julianne Hough’s golden buzzer pick.

Luke Islam Background & Wingspan Arts

Luke is from New York City and a member on Wingspan Arts, a nonprofit arts education organization based in Manhattan. His most recent performance was as part of The Cast Recording Experience 2019 program by The Broadway Star Project. Luke performed alongside fellow artist Gianna Harris in his rendition of “The Last Night of the World” from the Broadway musical Miss Saigon.

During the audition, Islam told the judges that his dream was to be a star and make it to Broadway; “My dream is to be a star and make it to Broadway. All my life I’ve been thinking about Broadway and I love it so, so much. America’s Got Talent is the next way to achieve that goal.”

Islam began going to Broadway musicals since he was six years old. His mother revealed in the inro on his AGT auditions that she took him to his first Broadway show at the age of six and ‘ something sparked’. Islam said that every weekend he entered the Broadway lotteries and that way he would get discounted tickets. He also revealed that he had seen ‘Kinky Boots’ eight times.

In 2018, Luke competed in the Broadway musical Waitress’s Karaoke competition. His vocals were so impressive that the official Instagram of the show posted his performance on their page. Hosted by Jason Mraz and Tiffany Mann, comments flooded the post with fans writing, “Amazing! What a voice!” and “Ok LUKE. wow. I, along with the audience, was captured after the first 3 words. Goosebumps all over, what a tone! What control! “Even as the walls come tumbling down” was when my jaw dropped. Incredible!!!!!”

Luke Islam Auditions on AGT

America’s Got Talent final episode of the Auditions (Season 14 Episode7) airs on Tuesday, July 9th. The 12-year-old is one of the AGT contestants who showcased his talent in front of judges Simon Cowell, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union, and Howie Mandel.

Luke Islam Closed out the night performing “She Used to Be Mine” from the Broadway musical Waitress. His performance catapulted him right to the live round as Julianne Hough’s golden buzzer pick.

In his intro, Luke spoke about how much he loves Broadway, listing the many shows he’s seen and reflecting on how he hopes to be on a Broadway stage one day. He told host Terry Crews that he first discovered his love for performing after he participated in a showcase at his preschool.

Luke stepped on stage to meet the judges, while his parents waited with Crews in the wings. Gabrielle Union asked Luke who his favorite judge is, and though he said at first that he loves all the judges, he admitted that Julianne Hough is his favorite because he and his sister have been following her and her brother Derek’s dance career.

At the end of his performance, Luke broke into tears on stage as he watched his audience jump to their feet to applaud him.

Howie Mandel told him that he thinks they were watching the start of his dream coming true. Simon Cowell advised him to treat every performance going forward as “an audition for the best producers on Broadway.”

After telling Luke that she is flattered that he looks up to her and her brother, Julianne pressed the golden buzzer, sending Luke right to the live Hollywood round. Luke fell to the floor as glittered rained down around him and “You Will Be Found” from the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen played.

Prior to the show, Judge Julianne in a tweet said that she would be pressing her golden buzzer before the end of the Auditions 6 episode. After her pick for the golden buzzer, she tweeted his audition video to her followers, writing “Luke is going to be a Broadway star! What an effortless performance. I was moved to joyful tears watching this moment, he deserves the world! Please support Luke in every way, he’s special to all of us!”

The other a few talented young singers that have made it to the next round, like Sophie Pecora, Ansley Burns, and Golden Buzzer winner Kodi Lee.

Luke Islam AGT Quarterfinals Performance Part 1

On Tuesday, August 13th, at 8/7c, America’s Got Talent live night performances proceeded live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Luke Islam took the stage once again with an amazing performance.

His cover of “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen is a success, and the judges and crowd couldn’t be more pleased. Cowell was particularly impressed with Islam’s vocal control, given his relative youth. Expect to see Islam return for more.
