Nomhle Nkonyeni was born on April 9th, 1942. She has appeared in numerous television productions, including Mzansi, Tsha Tsha, and the television mini-series, Society and recently she was on etv’s Igazi.

In 2016 she was awarded the SA Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) Lifetime Achievement Award. She was also recognised in the same category at the 2018 Eastern Cape cultural awards. The late actress also received the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver earlier this year.

On June 2019, Aggrey Road in New Brighton – where she was born – was renamed after her. Speaking after the honour, she said: “I grew up in New Brighton. My relationship with that street is my church, Arthur Wellington Church, which was built in 1945. “I spent most of the week in that street – on Monday I would attend the little girls’ prayer, on Wednesday I was there, on Friday we visited the temple. I spent a lot of time there. Every day of the week I was in Aggrey and asked myself who is Aggrey? Who is Gratten? Who are these people?”

Nomhle Nkonyeni passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 10th, 2019. The award-winning 77-year-old has been in hospital since Friday, 5th July. Her nephew, Vusi Manapha, confirmed that she has died, according to Herald Live. Nkonyeni is a greatly-admired woman, not only for her acting but also for the many things she did for others and will be sorely missed.
