Gisèle Bardet is renown for being the wife of Raymond Poulidor, nicknamed “Pou-Pou”, who was a French professional bicycle racer, who rode for Mercier his entire career. The world of cycling is mourning the death of the Poulidor who is reported to have died on Wednesday, November 13th, 2019 in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat. He had been in a hospital since October 8th, 2019.

Raymond Poulidor met love in the arms of a young woman named Gisèle Bardet. The two lovebirds celebrated their wedding as they said “I do” on April 16th, 1961  in the town of Champnétery, in Haute-Vienne. At the time, Raymond Poulidor was 25 years old.

He lived with his wife Gisèle in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, east of Limoges, where he made short trips on his mountain bike.

“Poupou”, nicknamed cycling fans, and his wife became Gisèle Poulidor had two daughters, named Corinne Poulidor and Isabelle Poulidor. Raymond Poulidor was the grandfather of two grandchildren, David van der Poel and Mathieu van der Poel, both passionate about racing sports.

Their daughter, Corinne, is married to the former world cyclo-cross champion and Tour of Flanders winner Adri van der Poel. His grandsons David and Mathieu are also cyclists. Mathieu van der Poel became cyclo-cross world champion himself in the junior race in Koksijde in 2012 (Koksijde) and in 2013 in Louisville, and with the elite in 2015 (Tábor) and 2019 (Bogense), while his most highly regarded success in road cycling came when he won the famed road cycling classic – Amstel Gold Race – in 2019, winning it in one of the race’s most dramatic finishes ever.

Who is Raymond Poulidor?

Raymond Poulidor was born on April 15th, 1936, and died on November 13th, 2019. He was nicknamed “Pou-Pou”, a French professional bicycle racer, who rode for Mercier his entire career.

On Wednesday, November 13th, 2019 around 2 am, Raymond Poulidor gave his last breath at the age of 83 years. According to information from our colleagues at L’Équipe, the former French cycling champion has breathed died at Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, where he lived in Haute-Vienne. He was 83 years old.

“Raymond has been very tired since the last Tour de France,” his wife Gisèle Poulidor told AFP back in October 2019 after he was hospitalized as the result of a heart condition.

“He left us this morning,” his wife Gisele told AFP from their home in western France.
