Ric Ocasek Biography

Ric Ocasek (Richard Theodore Otcasek) was an American singer-songwriter and producer who was best known as the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the rock band the Cars. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Cars in 2018. Ric died on September 15, 2019.

There is minimal information about his family, he, however, grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. When he was 16 years old his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio.

Ric Ocasek The Cars

Ocasek’s was a founding member of The Cars. He played rhythm guitar and sang lead vocals for a majority of songs (bassist Benjamin Orr was lead vocalist on the remaining tracks). The band rose to fame with their self-titled hit album in 1978, which included hits such as “My Best Friend’s Girl” and “Just What I Needed.”

In 2010 he reunited with the surviving original members of the Cars to record their first album in 24 years, titled Move Like This, which was released on May 10, 2011.

Ric was married three times, he married his first wife early in life and they ended up divorcing. In 1971 he married his second wife Suzanne Ocasek, he was still married to her when he met his third wife Paulina Porizkova in 1984 who was 18 years old at the time. He later divorced his second wife and married Paulina in 1989.

Ocasek met Paulina in 1984 when she was 18 years old, during the filming of the music video of the Car’s song ‘Drive’. The two got married on August 23, 1989.

Paulina is a Swedish- American model. actress and author. She became the first woman from Central Europe to be on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in 1984 at the age of 18 and the second woman to be featured on the swimsuit issue’s front cover consecutive times (1984 and 1985).

The couple separated in 2018. Paulina took to Instagram where she announced that they had separated after nearly three decades of marriage.

She wrote; “Our family always has been — and still is — a well-built car. When the four of us are together, we can go wherever the road takes us. But as a bicycle, my husband and I no longer pedal in unison. So we’re ditching the bicycle.

Ric and I have been peacefully separated for the past year. The photos of our happy family are, in fact, happy family photos; we are just no longer a couple.”

Ric Ocasek Kids

Ric had six children; six sons, two from each of his three marriages. Christopher Otcasek, Adam Otcasek (b.1970), Eron Otcasek (b.1973), Derek Otcasek (b.1981), Jonathan Raven Otcasek (b. November 4, 1993) and Oliver Otcasek (b. 1999).

His eldest son Christopher was a singer who formed the rock group Glamour Camp which released one album in 1989.

Ric Ocasek Death

According to Page Six, Ric was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Sunday, September 15, 2019. They reported that he was discovered unconscious and unresponsive at around 4:14 p.m. inside his Gramercy Park pad by his estranged wife, Paulina Porizkova.

Ric Ocasek Cause of Death

Ric’s cause of death has not been announced yet but Page Six reported that it seemed that he died from natural causes.
