Stephen James Easterbrook was born on August 6th, 1967. He is a British business executive who worked as the CEO of McDonald’s, until voted out following a relationship with an employee in contravention of company rules in November 2019.

Steve Easterbrook Early life & Education

Easterbrook was born on August  6th, 1967 in Watford, England. He grew up in Watford and went to school at Watford Grammar School for Boys. He later joined St Chad’s College, Durham University to study natural sciences. At the University, he played cricket with fellow student, Nasser Hussain, who would later become an England cricket captain.

Steve Easterbrook Career

After university, he trained as an accountant with Price Waterhouse. Easterbrook first worked for McDonald’s in 1993 as a manager in London. In 2011 he left to become CEO of PizzaExpress and then CEO of Wagamama, two British casual dining chains, before returning to McDonald’s in 2013.

On March 1st, 2015, after being the Chief brand officer of McDonald’s and its former head in the UK and northern Europe, he became the CEO of the company, succeeding Don Thompson, who stepped down on 28 January 2015.

Steve Easterbrook Fired over Relationship with an Employee

In November 2019, the McDonald’s board of directors voted to remove Easterbrook as CEO, as he had violated corporate policies on personal conduct by entering into a relationship with an employee. He was replaced as CEO by Chris Kempczinski, who had been president of McDonald’s USA.

The fast food giant’s board of directors voted Friday to terminate Steve Easterbrook after investigating his consensual relationship with the unnamed staffer, the Wall Street Journal reported.  In a statement, the company said that the CEO “violated company policy and demonstrated poor judgment involving a recent consensual relationship with an employee.”

Managers are forbidden from engaging in romantic relationships with employees, per the burger chain’s policy.

Easterbrook’s total compensation while working as a CEO for McDonald’s was estimated at $15.4 million. It has been reported that his salary is $1.3 million and he’s given stock options valued at $9 million along with incentive pay of $4.6 million.

Steve Easterbrook was previously married to Susie Jennings, the couple divorced in 2015.. They have three children together, Katie, Rebecca, and Lauren Easterbrook. Katie and Lauren attend the University of Bristol and Rebecca is currently enrolled at the Berkhamsted School, according to Facebook.

Easterbrook met his ex-wife as he worked briefly as an accountant at massive consulting firm PwC. He however quickly realized that the finance world was not for him and left the company in 1993. Susie as a training boss at PwC at the time. Susie worked at PwC from 1991 – 1997 before leaving the company to become a part-time estate agent.

Easterbrook’s wife Susie and their three children still live at the home in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. Steve currently lives in Illinois, close to the McDonald’s corporate HQ in Chicago.
