Swaraj Kaushal Biography
Swaraj Kaushal is an Indian criminal lawyer practising in New Delhi. He is the husband of the late former external affairs minister and senior BJP leader, Sushma Swaraj. He is a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India. He became India’s youngest Advocate General at the age of 34.

Swaraj is the husband of the late Sushma Swaraj who was an Indian Supreme court lawyer and politician. The two got married on July 13, 1975 during the height of Emergency. The two met during their college days while studying law in Delhi. The two believed in opposite ideologies, Sushma Swaraj had her roots in RSS while Swaraj Kaushal had a socialist belief system.
They both worked as part of a team of lawyers who contested the case of George Fernandes during the Emergency days of the Indira Gandhi regime.
Who was Sushma Swaraj
Sushma Swaraj was a senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party and former Minister of External Affairs of India in the first Narendra Modi government (2014 – 2019). She was the second woman to hold the office. In 1977 at the age of 25, she became the youngest cabinet minister of Indian state of Haryana. She was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. She also served as 5th Chief Minister of Delhi for a short duration in 1998.
Sushma decided not to contest the 2019 Indian general election due to health reasons as she was recovering from a kidney transplant.
Swaraj thanked her for her decision not to contest. He tweeted; “Thank you very much for your decision not to contest any more elections. I remember there came a time when even Milkha Singh stopped running. This marathon has been on since 1977-that is 41 years. You have contested 11 direct elections. In fact, you contested all elections held since 1977 except when the party did not allow you to contest in 1991 and 2004.”
Sushma Swaraj Death
Sushma died on August 6, 2019 at the age of 67, after suffering a heart attack at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted; “A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people.”

Swaraj together with his wife Sushma has one daughter known as Bansuri Swaraj. She is a criminal lawyer who graduated from Oxford University and practices in the Delhi High Court and in the Supreme Court of India.

Swaraj is an Indian lawyer who became a designated Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India at age 34, becoming India’s youngest ever Advocate General.
He defended socialist leader George Fernandes in the famous Baroda dynamite case during the Emergency of 1975-77. In 1979 she secured the release of underground Mizo leader Laldenga in the conspiracy trial.
He was also the Constitutional Adviser to the underground Mizo National Front during negotiations with Government of India. He helped write the Mizoram Peace Accord which was signed on June 30, 1986 which ended 20 years of insurgency.
He was appointed the first Advocate General of Mizoram, the state’s premier legal officer. He was the youngest-ever Advocate General in the country. He is an expert on India’s northeast region and its insurgency problem.
Swaraj Kaushal Political Career
Swaraj was a Member of Parliament of Haryana Vikas Party representing Haryana State during 1998-2004. He previously served as Governor of Mizoram from 8 February 1990 – 9 February 1993, becoming India’s youngest ever Governor of a State at the age of 37 years.
