He is the son of Bill Withers and Marcia Johnson. Withers married Marcia Johnson in 1997. He has a sibling by the name Kori. His mother, Marcia is the direct management of Beverly Hills-based publishing companies, in which his children also became involved as they became adults.
Withers had said previously that he withdrew from music and public life in the 1980s in order to spend more time with his family. In a 2015 interview with Garden & Gun, he said that the decision was made when record executives pitched him ideas including covering Elvis Presley songs. Withers said, “Get the hell out of here. I got tired of it. Most of my dreams came true and some of my nightmares, too. I had a pretty good run. And by then I had a family and some kids, so I went about trying to do a good job at that. Without even thinking about it, I just went ahead with my life.”

Withers won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for four more. His life was the subject of the 2009 documentary film Still Bill. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
He died from heart complications aged 81 on March 30th, 2020. The singer died on Monday in Los Angeles, the family told the Associated Press.
