Lorraine Mazankowski is best known for being the wife of Don Mazankowsi, a Canadian politician who served as a cabinet minister under Prime Ministers Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney. He also served as a director or trustee for a number of companies, including Weyerhaeuser Co., ATCO Ltd., Shaw Communications Inc., and Power Corporation of Canada.
Lorraine Mazankowski Encouraged his husband to resign from politics
Don was a loving husband to Lorraine, and father to Greg, Roger, and Don. Together, Lorraine and Don are proud parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.
As the story goes, it was a uniquely Canadian metaphor from his wife that prompted Don Mazankowski’s departure from politics in 1993 after a 25-year ascension to the penultimate position of power in Ottawa.
“She said a good hockey player knows when to hang up his skates,” the then-deputy prime minister in Brian Mulroney’s Tory government told the Toronto Star in early June that year.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said Mr. Mazankowski personified the virtues of humility and servant leadership. “Don and his wife Lorraine stayed true to their rural roots, continuing to live in Vegreville, and more recently Sherwood Park,” Mr. Kenney said in a statement.
“At the heart of his public service was a belief that Western Canada needed strong voices to defend its economic and political interests in the Canadian federation. Maz was such a voice for decades. For that and for all that he did, Albertans are deeply grateful.”
On June 18, 1993 — less than two weeks after taking his wife’s Lorraine’s veiled advice — Mazankowski was summoned to a ceremony in Ottawa at which he was elevated in title from “honourable” to “right honourable” — a rare honorific typically reserved for the governor general, the country’s chief justice and the prime minister.
The honour was orchestrated by Mulroney as a parting gift to his friend.
