Elizabeth D. Barnes is the niece of Lawyer Stephen Barnes who both died in a plane crash in the town of Pembroke in Genesee County at around 11:45 a.m. Friday, October 2nd, 2020.
“It is with great sadness that I learned of the tragic passing of Steve Barnes in a plane crash,” Barnes’ longtime partner, Ross Cellino, said in a statement to The Buffalo News. “Steve and I worked together for many years at our firm. He was always a fearless advocate for his clients. His passing is a significant loss for the legal community.”

Elizabeth D. Barnes Parents
Her father, Richard Barnes, was an attorney at Cellino & Barnes and the brother of the firm’s co-founder Stephen Barnes. She was following in her father and mother’s footsteps in her budding career as a lawyer. Her mother, the late Deborah N. Sorbini-Barnes, was an assistant U.S. attorney in Buffalo who died in 2006.
In addition to her father, Ms. Barnes is survived by a brother, Brian Barnes, Cellino said.
Elizabeth D. Barnes Plane Crash
Barnes’ niece, Elizabeth D. Barnes was aboard the plane with Barnes, the paper reported, and also died in the crash. Barnes’ wife, Ruth, told the Buffalo News that the pair were heading to a birthday party for his mother in Buffalo when the accident occurred.
She died in the crash, according to Ross M. Cellino Jr., Stephen Barnes’ longtime partner in the law firm, and Ruth Barnes, Stephen Barnes’ ex-wife.

Elizabeth Barnes was employed for the past 1 ½ years as an assistant regional counsel at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Boston, according to her linkedin.com page. Prior to that, she worked as an assistant district attorney for the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office in Lowell, Mass.
She had also worked as an intern with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office in Rochester.
Elizabeth graduated from Orchard Park High School, the University of Rochester and George Washington University Law School. She was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts and New York, in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
