“The beloved illustrator Jerry Pinkney has died. His long-time agent says Pinkney suffered a heart attack today.
Pinkney was a legend in the world of children’s publishing.
He won a Caldecott medal for his 2010 picture book The Lion and The Mouse; he also won five Coretta Scott King awards from the American Library Association and a lifetime achievement award from the Society of Illustrators.
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Pinkney back in 2009 when he was a guest at Richland County School District One’s “Reading Rocks Our World” event.
He was wonderful with the children … no doubt his incredible talent has inspired many young authors & illustrators. His books are a true gift.”
