Mekbul Timmer Cause of Death

The family released a statement on his passing on March 7, 2022, on the Lincoln Project, stating that they were devasted by the sudden and tragic passing of their youngest child, Mekbul Timmer. He was a high school senior and had a promising future in front. The family says that he was respected and admired by the people who knew him. The Lincoln Project asks on behalf of the family that you respect their privacy at this time. A cause of death is yet to be released as the statement did not specify how the young Timmer died.

“8 years ago, on a bright, cool morning in Addis Ababa, we finally met the little boy we’d been sending pictures to and exchanging letters with across the ocean. The big personality in a tiny frame who despite every incredible obstacle he faced, somehow knew he had so much love still to give and found us, the luckiest people on this globe, to share it with. 2 days later he officially became our son.

Those first moments watching as Mekbul, who couldn’t wait for his Dad he’d never yet met to exit fully out of the van, climbed up him like a tree, holding on tight. His reluctance to let go of this wonderful Dad to shyly hug a new Mom he’d need to open his heart to because he’d already loved a Mom once. His excitement mixed with adrenaline and most certainly some fear had him grinning and hugging and, like every normal 11-year-old, begging to play with our phones.

My heart met you before I did. I loved you before that day and the miracle is, you loved me too. It’s miraculous because opening your heart again after so much loss takes a kind of bravery that most adults will never know, let alone a tiny, sick child with no one and any reason to trust.

Mekbul Timmer, you will always be the bravest person I ever knew.

I’m so lucky I got to fall in love with you. Thank you for letting me. Thank you for loving us all so big and so fully with everything you had. It will never end.”
